Eriobotrya japonica

A nice tree, ideally suited to small gardens. Its large, leathery, evergreen leaves give it an exotic appearance. In warmer countries it will grow edible loquat fruits in Spring. It will do this in the Uk but not always so readily. Grow in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. Choose a sheltered spot to avoid wind damage to the leaves and to give you the best chance of fruit. In its native China it can reach 8m but here less than half that. Hardy in this area.
